Program Description
Advocacy in Action College program will engage young adult learners to work on and off the college campus to limit where and how tobacco products are promoted, advertised and sold and to advance local and statewide policy action to prevent and reduce tobacco use.
The program will actively engage students in policy and advocacy actions such as smoke-free outdoors policies on and off campus; smoke-free dorm policies; tobacco-free campus store policies; policies prohibiting tobacco company of tobacco product promotion in bars, fraternities and sororities, and other venues on and off campus; and policies prohibiting tobacco company commercial sponsorship and corporate giving.
Director Duties
• Implement start up of Advocacy in Action
• Build and maintain relationship with target College Campuses
• Function as the primary contact with the New York Tobacco Control Program’s (TCP) modality manager
• Report activity on the CAT System on a timely fashion
• Develop and follow yearly management plan(s)
• Monitor and allocate TCP budget, in addition to work along with FSW fiscal agent in budget maintenance
• Attend all meetings, trainings and workshops as prescribed by NYSDOH
• Attend all modality, regional and statewide meetings convened by the NY TPC
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the Advocacy in Action Program
• Develop and expand public relations and media advocacy strategies
• Interface with community members, organizations and decision makers at every level
• Build support for the program by attending community network meetings and generating a core group of volunteer students to implement program actions
• Collaborate with like programs within community, FSW, and countywide.
The Ideal Candidate should possess the following:
-BA/BS degree (minimum) Masters Preferred
- At least 2 years experience in a public health setting
- Working knowledge of advocacy and policy driven initiatives
-Ability to build support among all stakeholders (college administrators/students, local politicians, community members) for tobacco control action
-Strong public speaking abilities
